Experience Otter Creek

Experience Otter Creek - April 30

Get your feet wet and explore what lives in, on, and around Otter Creek at a free event scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at Markle Mill Park, 4905 N. Mill Dam Rd., Terre Haute.

“Experience Otter Creek" is a family-friendly event and is sponsored by the Otter Creek Project and the Ouabache Land Conservancy as part of a Federal Clean Water Act Section 319 grant.  There will be lots of hands-on activities for all to participate in.  View fish living in Otter Creek collected via electroshocking demonstrations from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management Surveys Section. Identify birds with the Wabash Valley Audubon Society. Get familiar with wildlife habitat needs with the National Wild Turkey Federation. Learn about invasive plant species with Vigo Invasives Management.  Discuss soil health and backyard gardening with the Clay & Vigo Soil & Water Conservation Districts, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and People Helping Improve Soil Health.  Learn about mussels, otters, and crayfish from Indiana State University and riverSCAPE.  Dobbs Park Nature Center and Purdue Extension will share about bats, beekeeping, and pollinator conservation.

“We hope to connect local residents with Otter Creek and the things that live within its drainage at Experience Otter Creek,” said Sara Peel, Otter Creek Project coordinator. “Our goal is to allow people to drop in as their schedule allows. They can talk with those groups that are of interest to them.”

In addition, the Ouabache Land Conservancy will provide free tree seedlings as the supply lasts.  Seedling species to be given away are as follows:  American Plum, Black Cherry, Blackgum, Common Chokecherry, Elderberry, Hazelnut, Gray Dogwood, Pawpaw, Persimmon, Red Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Washington Hawthorn, Shagbark Hickory, and the following species of oaks: Chinkapin, White, Black, Scarlet, and Chestnut.

No registration is required. For more details, visit https://ouabachelandconservancy.org and click on the Events tab, or contact Peel at ottercreekwatershed@gmail.com.
